Incomplete projects, land wrangles stalling Isiolo's progress, says Senator Dullo
By Maureen Kinyanjui |
Some of the stalled projects include a modern market, an abattoir, the county administration block and the expansion of Isiolo International Airport.
Land grabbing and stalled infrastructure projects have become significant barriers to the development of Isiolo County, leaving local communities frustrated and seeking justice.
The growing issue of illegal land seizures, often involving powerful private entities, has displaced many families and hindered the progress of vital projects intended to improve the area's infrastructure.

As a result, Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo wants the Senate Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources to investigate the situation, following concerns raised about the unlawful transfer of land to individuals or private companies without community consent
Through a statement before the house, the Committee led by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, has been asked to provide a comprehensive audit of all community lands, including details of surveyed, registered, or pending registration parcels.
"The Committee should provide an audit of all transfers carried out in respect of community land in Isiolo County from 2016 to date. It should also state whether respective communities granted consent for the transfers and provide data on parcels of land that have minerals,” Dullo said in the statement.
The senator has also requested a report on the current status of these lands, particularly those that have been unlawfully seized, and what steps are being taken to return them to the community.
Stalled road project
In another troubling development, the Horn of Africa Project, a key infrastructure initiative launched in 2017 to improve roads and transportation in the region, remains unfinished.
The project has been plagued by delays, and the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing has been asked to provide an update on the status of its completion.
This includes a detailed account of what has been done so far, what remains to be completed, and the reasons for the hold-up as requested by Senator Dullo.
"The Committee should explain why the project has not been completed and outline the progress made in compensating residents whose land was acquired for the project," the request noted.
Dullo is also calling for a full report on the state of roads in Isiolo County.
This includes the funds allocated for road projects, a breakdown of ongoing contracts, and the maintenance of roads between 2022 and 2024.
"The Committee should provide a detailed account of the total amount allocated for roads and any pending bills related to roadworks," reads the statement further.
These unresolved issues have caused widespread frustration, as the residents of Isiolo County continue to struggle with inadequate infrastructure and land disputes that threaten their livelihoods.
During the 2022 campaigns, Isiolo Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo pledged that if elected to office, he would complete all the projects started by his predecessor Mohammed Kuti before starting new ones.
Some of the stalled projects include a modern market, an abattoir, the county administration block and the expansion of Isiolo International Airport.
